Word is that Scott Bieda has been named as the offensive coordinator. Volunteer coach last year. http://www.bostoncannons.com/players/scott-bieda The team love him and wanted him to play a bigger role on offense last year. School should announce this.

The vacation comment warrants a prize for best response. I'll put up a quart of Mickey's Malt, "The Mean Green," to the winner.

That stuff was awful even when I was young enough to appreciate the merits of Genny Cream (strangely popular in the late 70s).

The cheapest kegs we could get in bulk varied, but Hamm's and Schmidt's were usually in the running. Also with Genny beer, which had red caps on its kegs.

To be honest, I didn't know it was this bad. From the article link below. This may be history but it's not tradition. And fans still contend Lafayette can be relevant in this sport as the Big 10 and others takes increasing interest in it? The window isn't closing. It was never open.

Lafayette, which competes in the Patriot League, has had just six winning seasons in its 91-year history and has finished above .500 just once (2010) in the last 33 years. With the exception of an occasional upset — like the Leopards’ 9-8 win over Navy on March 11, just their second victory over the Midshipmen in 18 all-time meetings — Lafayette has struggled to gain traction in one of the nation’s toughest conferences.

When will the administration at Lafayette College  get tired of these national humiliations ? That article is an indictment of generations of athletic administrations and the Board of Trustees that supervises it.These types of things are endemic.  I was researching a classmate for my classnotes column and relearned something I had forgotten. My senior year the wrestling team  went 9-4. That was the best record in 12 previous seasons. Subsequently when I was serving on the Maroon Club Executive Committee the sport was dropped altogether over our objections by President Ellis  to save $40,000.00.

The historic record of men's lax is not just dismal, it is a disgrace for a school that strives to be good at everything it does ( the same could be said for the entire athletic program).  While there are specific reasons for the poor performance in individual sports (volley ball is really a club not a varsity sport), the reason for the poor record of MLax is lack of scholarships in a league where the best teams have them and, more important, the lack of recognition by the AD and the college that MLax is a sport the college could compete in at a national level if it was properly supported.  Coming from Bill and Mary ("too many Marys and not enough Bills") I'm quite sure our esteemed AD knew nothing about the sport when he arrived on the hill.  Now it is probably too late but we can still try.  A fully funded program (including the very supportive parents and alumni group) and a hungry, aggressive coach should translate to a minimum .500 League record in 2-3 years.  That would be a respectable short term goal.   LC should be very competitive with the likes of LU, Gate, HC, BU and Bucknell.  There is no excuse for consistently losing to them.  The service academies and Loyola are a different matter.

Lafayette has been playing lacrosse for a very long time - longer than the vast majority of DI schools. The problem always has been lacrosse's association with being a "boarding school sport." Lafayette long ago escaped its image as a place exclusively full of boarding school grads, but the sport continues to be treated that way.

The only remedy at this point is to get a powerhouse DI coach and market the sh*t out of the program. That costs money, of course.

The window isn't closing. It was never open.

Although I agree with everything that B-Pard wrote, I should have clarified my comment about the window.  The strong growth curve that still exists in lacrosse, including television coverage, provides the window that I was referring to: http://thegrowthblog.blogspot.com/p/new-varsity-college-programs.html

The link shows that plenty of other colleges think enough of the sport to start new varsity programs, and must find it beneficial to their school.

I fully realize that, like all of the sports listed in our Dashboard of Woe, everything revolves around an actual commitment from the administration.  But, I think there is a real potential ROI with lax as the coverage for this sport continues to grow.

I think we would all be pretty pumped with the .500 league record proposed by Ed65.
